What is a Primer for Acrylic Paint?
Primer is commonly used prior to painting walls or objects with the final base color. The primer seals the existing wall and doesn't allow chemicals from plaster or underlying coatings to leech through. Primer allows for a stronger bond between paint and surface layers. It is commonly purchased in the paint section of hardware stores.
Surface adhesion
Primary is used to base-coat items that ordinary latex paint would not adhere to. Concrete, plastic and other surfaces require some of the different specialty primers available. Be sure to purchase the appropriate primer.
Application
Primer is applied the same way as the remaining coats of paint are applied -- rolled, brushed or sprayed on.
Clean up
Once a project is finished, brushes and rollers can be rinsed with water.
Read paint can labels
Prior to starting a paint project, read the paint can label. Check to see if a primer is advised.Clean the surface
Any left-over primer can be air-dried by leaving the lid off the can, or pouring the primer onto cardboard or newspaper outdoors.
Tinting primer
Primer commonly comes in white or off-white colors. However, to decrease the number of paint layers, primers can be custom tinted to darker shades such as gray.Always apply primer to a clean dry surface. Remove dust, grime and other materials that have accumulated for the best results and a professional finish.
