White Plains offers two outdoor swimming pools. Westchester Childrens Museum provides hands-on programs that are adaptable to all learning levels. The museum provides education and activities involving science, art, music, climbing, building, pretend and water play areas. The areas each involve hands on activities for parents to participate, as well. Another historical location is the home of Washington Irving, who created characters such as Rip Van Winkle, Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Tours of the home and gardens are led by costumed guides. A scavenger hunt, games, book and set of 19th century dominoes are included in "Irving's Traveling Totes" for children to enjoy.


Parks


Cranberry Lake Preserve contains 190 acres of land. Home to many plants and animals, this preserve offers family oriented nature programs and educational displays. Three hiking trails are offered that range from 1- to 2 1/2-miles-long, taking you around cliffs and the lake. Hiking within the preserve allows you to view a 4-acre lake, cliffs, mixed hardwood forest, fresh pools and a swamp area. Internships are available for students interested in theater. They offer hands-on learning opportunities through full- and part-time internships that run with the school calendar.
